Hotch Potch's Street Theatre Club

We're very excited to introduce a series of new clubs for young people aged 8+. Street Theatre club (lead by Hotch Potch's artistic director Laura Wheeler) will engage its creative participants in a theatre club with a difference.

Hotch Potch have been bringing their unique style of street theatre to outdoor events and festivals throughout Cornwall, the south west of England and Northern Ireland for around 13 years. You may have seen them pop up at yearly events such as; Camborne's Trevithick Day, Redruth's Murdoch Day, Rock Oyster Festival or Newquay's Zombie Crawl. Ross and Laura- Hotch Potch's founders first met when they studied a degree in Street Arts at The University of Winchester. There they learned the art of street performance including how to create, manage and perform work for outdoor audiences. Hotch Potch's ethos is all about bringing different art forms together to create new and exciting work outdoors- often with an environmental message at its core.

"Street Theatre and Outdoor Arts was like stepping into another world, when I first discovered it. Here was acting, music, dance, visual arts, circus, puppetry and immersive installation all being brought together in a very wide field. So many creatives with a mission to do something a bit different. I didn't realise just how confined I felt by traditional theatre until I found Street Theatre. Even now I struggle to sit still when watching an indoor show, Outside you have the freedom to move, make noise, get totally involved as an audience member or don't- the choice is yours. I find that extremely accessible " - Laura Wheeler

Street Theatre club will introduce participants to drama games, physical theatre, puppetry, circus skills and storytelling whilst encouraging a strong sense of social connection. As a street performer the connection with your audience is so important. Without the black walls and curtains of the theatre you form a trust with your audience members and they feel really valuable and seen. Its a wonderful way to connect with people, highly beneficial for building confidence whilst exploring unique and special skills. These clubs will harness individuality and encourage outside the box thinking. They also open up possibilities of working towards public performances at local outdoor events in Cornwall.

Street Theatre club kicks off with a special introductory session at Cornwall's newest circus space Cirk Hes in Helston wed 29th May 1.00-3.00. Open to all young people aged 8+. Visit their website to book. Then from June 7th the weekly club begins at Lanner Community Centre- Fridays 1.30-3.00 for home educated children. An after school club and a club for teens is to follow later this year!

If you know a young person who is wildly creative with a big imagination then Street Theatre Club could be just the thing for them! Get in touch at; hotchpotchperformance@gmail.com to reserve a place on current or future clubs.
